Standing Firm on My Beliefs

Being an independent minded person is both a blessing a curse. You do what is right but in the process you hit hard on those that get in the way.

During a competition that we recently had, I had to handle the encoding of entries up to the tabulation of the results. My dilemma was that my daughter who was one of the swimmers was erroneously (by accident or by choice)entered in the level lower than what she really is in. During a prior competition she had earned a silver medal which entitled her to a promotion to the next level - from D to C. Now, having competed with the same girls unknowingly, she naturally won the gold. But as I had encountered her name and noticed the error, you can imagine how my thoughts raised. I could just let it pass without anyone noticing. Anyway, it wasn't really my fault that it happened. And my daughter was already rejoicing over the fact that she had taken the top spot in that category. It would be easy to ignore. But I couldn't let her win, Not if she didn't deserve to.

I had been in a consistent battle with the coaches just to let them know about the errors and dishonesty they had been practicing. This one might have been deliberately placed there. We had already issued the reclassification based on the results of the prior swimming competition and anyone could justhave checked her name out and seen it. But no, noone actually cared to check but I. And it did bother me.

Of course she didn't get any medal for that event. She did from other events even when I actually corrected her level. After all, the basis is her swimming time. But I had to tell her why she didn't get that one medal which caused her the trophy she wanted. 3 gold medals would have earned her a trophy. she only got 2. But when she heard my side of the story, she was so proud of me. Virtues can be taught best by experience.

Your Health In Your Hands

That's my impression of Kaiser Permanente health plans. Ever heard of them? I did when I was in the US. My mom and brother have a health coverage. Well, I thought, they're just one of the HMO's available. Perhaps like mine. But no, it isn't. It's more than just an HMO. It offers you more alternatives in taking control of your own health.
california kaiser health plans

Just how professional are they? Unlike other HMO's, Kaiser health plans manages your health record for you. They have their own medical team that takes care of their clients. Plus the features of california kaiser health plans allows you to choose what coverage you need - individual, family, corporate. Another one that I like is that feature which allows you to save for your health protection - the health savings account. It lets you decide on what to spend your money. It doesn't have a fixed amount because it is a savings account. Thus if you have more money, you can save more. But if you don't, then you just stash away whatever is affordable to you at the moment. Great huh?

I've personally witnessed how the system works because my brother was hospitalized while I was in California. And I can tell you how good they a job they have done. But what are my words compared to what someone has experienced first hand? My brother has beyond just kind words for them. Sadly though, they're just in California. Can't these guys come over to the Philippines too? The Philippines could use a professional service company such as theirs.

Child Stress

My daughter had to submit her assignment last monday. It was an oratorical piece on "The Youth of Today in a Fast-Paced World". To help her without depriving her of the chance to develop her own writing skill, I asked her to writer her own version and I'd write mine. After that, we'd just fuse both materials together.

As I was working on merging our works, I realized just how stressful it is to be a child nowadays. Demands from both school and home have deprived my child of her youth. Clearly, it is a result of being goal-oriented and the drive to excel in everything that she does.

Stress leads to many wrong things - mentally, physically, socially, etc. It would be unfair to expose the children to so much at a young age. gradually would be better.

What am I saying? well, it's just that our children need our love, support and time. But above those, they also need time to be themselves, to be children, to be carefree and be with friends.

I'm glad Ikee has that with her friends from her swimming team. Perhaps, I should just give her more time to spend with them.

Moms Know Best

Mother knows best. Why? Because mothers take everything into consideration before making a decision. When shopping for things that matter, like computers and electronic items, the wise mom would check out an item in one store and jump to the next one and to the next one to compare prices, quality, design and after-sales service, if there's any. Sometimes, though this becomes tedious that, mothers, including myself, tend to get so tired that we don't have energy left to tend to the needs of the family. Or sometimes, we give up such that we end up buying the next available one and thus defeat the primary reason for comparing prices.

Well, there's good news for us moms. With the power of the internet, shopping now becomes more convenient, less time-consuming and fun. Even shopping for computers, which require some technical knowledge, is easier because we can compare those right from our home. It's so easy to do while doing our chores. I made the choice for our laptop by checking out the internet.

A word of advice though - you should set your parameters before checking lest you get confused. With so much information, sometimes it is also hard to choose when everything is there. You must know what the basis for your choice would be. Then, use the power of the internet to find what you are looking for.

Eco-Friendly Companies: John Aquino

Saving the Earth is everybody's business. Not, just the student who takes it up in class, not just the science teacher's who is tasked to inform the class about the problems in the globe, not just Al Gore's who travels the world to disseminate information about Global warming. Not just theirs but ours too because we are all affected by what is happening to the earth and its atmosphere. Here is one person who is in business because he tries to save the earth by being in the business of solid waste management. I received this one in my inbox lately and I'm glad we have something like this in Manila:

Turn your trash into cash! (call us: 8977199 / 5633027 / 0921-8370993)

Did you know that poorly running air conditioners are not only less cooling & noisy but also consume 50% more electricity than efficiently working ones? Yes. Those sad & tired A/Cs are electricity- gobbling monsters!

TIP! Inefficient air conditioners consume 50% more electricity and malfunction often. You end up wasting more money via your electricity bills and occasional repair fees.

So now you want to sell away & get rid of those old, inefficient, sometimes even irreparable scrap A/Cs right?

But due to the influx of very cheap surplus air conditioners available in the market today… What fool would buy your bad A/C if they could buy very cheap but efficient ones? Right?!?

But because we utilize A/C parts, we'll buy them from you. Yes! We're the fools who'll buy your old inefficient or scrap air conditioners and even pick them up from you!

You can't pass this up now. Sell it now or keep your trash forever!

So convert your bad air conditioners into cash. Free yourself from clutters. Save the environment by letting us recycle your trash and we all win!

Interested? Let us know. (call us: 8977199 / 5633027) FREE PICK-UP SERVICE

We also buy office and home appliances/equipmen ts/furniture/ wares, demolition/renovati on debris, heavy equipments, scrap cars/trucks/ etc., surplus, warehouse stocks, salvage items, etc.

We offer clear up-clean up-pick up services for warehouses, basements, garages.

Do something for your country. Pass this message around. Forward this message to your family and friends. This venture helps both the environment and the economy.

Guess, this would be a good way to clean up while we prepare for christmas huh?

Semestral Breaks and Holidays are Family Time

It's almost the semestral break in my daughter's school. At least twice in a year, we would like to go out to take a vacation somewhere as a family. It is at this time when I, like a bulb connected to a switch, am set on a hunt for special bargains and travel discounts.

However, this time we may have to forego of the travel plans. Ikee has only 2 days for the semestral break which fall on thursday and friday, and 2 days for the weekend. But that weekend includes one day for the all saints day which is highly celebrated here in the Philippines. People, like us, trot to the cemeteries to pay our respects to the dead members of the family. Unfortunately, Nov. 1 falls on a saturday which makes it inconvenient. Well, Nov. 1 is something short of a reunion anyway so that should do for now.

The next time we may have the opportunity to travel is going to be during the Christmas break. We're considering going to the US to visit my mom and brothers. But going on vacation means we need things like lodging, food and transpo. As the self-declared family tour director and guide, I normally look for resources on the internet including vacation rentals for things like lodging and transportation.

One of the places we have always wanted to bring my daughter to, which we have not yet done, is Florida. My husband, who has been there, highly recommends the holiday spot. He particularly liked Orlando mainly because of the Walt Disney World and we are so looking forward to spending time there. But of course, we're on a budget, as always, and thus I need to look for florida vacation rentals and orlando vacations rentals which may let us keep our expense within our budget. I mean, you know, we don't want to run out of money right in the middle of the trip.

This website, www.vacationsbyowner.com, has practically everything I would need to prepare for a trip to Florida. As we have experienced it, the best and probably the cheapest alternative to a hotel room is having a home rented so that we can do everything that we need there at the same or probably even lesser cost. Let's do the math. For like 130 USD per night, we have 3 rooms which means we can share it with my relatives, we can cook, play, use the internet, swim at a pool, do the laundry. A hotel room would cost us about 65 USD and we'd have to buy food from the resto. we'd have to have the clothes washed at a laundromat to which might cost us a few more dollars. Plus, we won't be able to go picnic which we like. Thus, in my family renting homes will always be a consideration for any vacation that we plan. I do hope our next trip will be to Florida though. As always, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Would 1 week there be enough?

Use The English Language When Teaching An English Class

The title says it all I guess. I had been in English classes for two days now to prepare for my IELTS exam. It felt really crazy to be enrolled in those since being educated in the Philippines, I had undergone at least 15 years of formal english lessons in school. But, I thought it would be good to know what I would be in for during the exam.

The lessons were ok but could be better actually. There are a few comments I would raise with the owner though and I am seriously thinking of calling his attention about them. Firstly, the instructor spoke in Filipino while he was teaching English. I found that really crazy. I mean he would probably rationalize that he was just giving us the answers to the questions, which by the way I had expected to be rationalized. However, instructors are expected to teach what they preach.

Secondly, there were several grammatical errors in today's exercises. Not that I know English perfectly, which I do not claim to be so at all. But, I would expect my teachers to be better at it than I. One or two mistakes could have passed as typographical errors. But when there are at least 5, the impression you'd get is that the teacher doesn't really know the answers or that the material had not been thoroughly reviewed. I would be guilty of the second one because most of my blogs do not go through a second reading nor editing. But, hey, I'm not here to teach grammar.

I do hope that the review centers would be careful about what and how they present the materials. These are not given for free and there are people who depend on them for the information that would have a great effect on their lives.

How would you react if you were in my shoes?

Recycling - Earning While Saving the Earth?

The Earth as we know it will soon disappear if we do not do our part to help save it. It is noble to just think of ways to support that cause. Where I am, it is rare for people to think that the world does need help. That those who try to save the world are outnumbered to the point that they don't seem to exist. But what if someone actually does something to help? These guys would be heroes!

There aren't too many businesses that are worth looking up to because they make a difference. I found a company that is actually recycling australia. Veolia is into all sorts of services in recycling in australia. In fact the company goes into not just industrial and residential recycling, they even have recycling for business.

The company uses many facilities to recycle and treat wastes. Landfill, composting, and electronic waste recovery to name a few. There are others which cater to most of the waste that are found in their country. And, as though they aren't into the business, they offer recycling tips for free to augment their efforts.

They're is doing such a great work that I think they should have a presence in every country and not just in australia. Starting with IEC, the impact would be tremendous even if just a small portion of the population of the world would be involved. Imagine if they were in places such as the US, Japan, Korea, Thailand and most of Asia? These countries would comprise about 40 percent of the whole globe but they generate more than 50 percent of the world's trash.

Great deeds can only come from those who care. You know when you truly want to make a difference, you'll find many ways to do so.

Wheat Grass and Swimming - Any Connection?

Don't you think it strange to relate wheat grass to swimming? But when you really come to think of it, these two have a common denominator of being able to affect health.

I've heard of wheatgrass for some time now but I came across an exhibit at the Tiendesitas today of a company that endorses the plant as a health drink. Of course I was interested. For one, I'm an advocate of anything and everything that has an effect on health as my profession would dictate. Second is that I'm am currently part of a swimming competition organizing team and I've injected the idea of packaging the sport as part of a healthy lifestyle habit. It would only be natural to me to look into something that would be a potential exhibitor or sponsor.

I became more interested in the product when they had said the magic word (or words) - live enzymes! It hadn't been long since I had told my daughter's team the importance of adhering to probiotics. After all, one of the not so pleasant effects of swimming would be coming from the presence of undesirable bacteria in the water. With probiotics though, the risk of contracting diseases from water-borne microbes would be controlled by taking in bacteria that would naturally fight these unwanted "creatures".

So, I'm hoping that this company would join us during the competition. They seemed interested and excited in my proposal as I had been in both the competition/exhibit and their product.

Medals For Ikee

The swimming competition that Ikee just recently joined was held at the ULTRA. The Pasig Flying Dolphins Team, which she is a member of, organized and hosted the event where over 400 other swimmers participated in. Her events were, as usual, freestyle, breaststroke and butterfly. The first one, freestyle, she finished slower than usual. I was really surprised that she took a long time to swim the 25m course. According to her, the new goggles that I bought was too loose and she didn't have time to get her old one. So, she asked her teammate to let her borrow his. But, the goggles didn't fit her either that water went inside and she couldn't see. Which explains why she banged onto the lane marker and finished 2nd to the last in her heat. But because the heats were timed, she actually landed among the top ten. Moral: let her choose which goggles she'd like to wear.

Anyway, breast stroke is really her event so she earned a silver from the Class D 13-15 y.o. girls breast stroke event. She got to join in the Class B relay which actually earned her a gold. Good enough huh?

Best news is that the week before, her homeroom adviser-teacher in PCSHS announced that she is the only one in her class who made it to the honor roll this quarter. What's great is that the classmates commented that it didn't come as a surprise to them. Apparently, she has earned the respect of the other scholars.

Way to go baby!

Will Obama's Support for the Aliens in The US Land Him in the White House?

In an article written on his immigration policy, Mr. Obama has stated that he wants the undocumented foreigners in the US to learn english, and become citizens. He also wants more visas for immigrants to be able to fill the gap which the current employers are not able to fill and to give families the chance to be together.

That's really noble. The intention there is to do good to as many people as possible. As a Filipino, I find that to be beneficial for those of our countrymen who would like to be with their families or to seek greener pasture. However, because of the current plunging economy of the US, having to accommodate more people in a country which is not able to give enough jobs to its own citizens will most likely mean more trouble. You've got to support what you have in your own backyard before you even go out to do charity work.

I don't think that this will do much good to Mr. Obama's campaign when people analyze it. What do you think?

Homework Help For the Hopeless (Like Me!)

If you're like me who feels helpless when I don't know what my daughter is talking about in school and she has an assignment which she needs help with, then this is the day when your prayers would have been answered! If I sound like I just won the lottery, I feel kinda like that.

I just found this website, Our High School Homeschool, and found some of the resources which Ikee needs for her hard-to-find-and-figure-out assignments. The discovery of this site happened as I was dropping my card on the webpages of my advertisers. It has resources on chemistry, geography, math, psychology, etc. I just didn't find anything on Physics yet but I do hope they put it there too. Thank God for this family and for entrecard. You have to check it out.

Movie Review: The Mummy 3

We watched the movie last night. It had been a while since our last movie because of our activities - Ikee's school requirements, Boyet's work, and my job and training hunt.

Brendan Fraser has been our favorite since the first of The Mummy series. I love how he would look so naughty and so wholesome at the same time. Kinda reminds me Dennis the Menace. Well, because I am a big fan of Brendan, I have most certainly watched the mummy series and there's no way I'd let this one pass.

In the movie, Ric O'Connell (played by Brendan Fraser) is the dad of Alex. Alex unearth's the mummy - the chinese emperor who was cursed by a witch after he had betrayed her. As in the prior movies, the emperor is brought back to life but was defeated by Ric.

The movie is supposed to be the sequel of mummy 2 where Alex is in his toddler years. I would have wanted to watch how he would have grown into his teens first before they showed that him as a young adult. Another thing that I would not have expected is the fact that Ric is supposed to be in his fifties or sixties maybe. Even if he were in his late forties, he'd still be considered old. Having an old guy do the "moves" in the movie wasn't really believable. Besides, did Shanghai really have such Westernized shows and cabarets in those years?

But what I loved about the movie is how it had shown the Asian virtue of children honoring and loving their parents like they were some form of deity as contrasted to the western parent-child relationship. In reality, that kind of respect and love. loyalty and sacrifice, although not as intense now as it had been, is still evident in most Asian cultures. That makes me proud to be Asian.

Not that I do not like this movie. I just don't feel it has the "magic" of the first movie. the first one had more romance, adventure, intensity and thrill to it thab this. Don't you agree?

Can Blogging Improve Your Writing Skills?

Awhile back, I wrote about how I would like to write blogs to improve the way I write. In that blog, I wrote the potential benefits we can get from blogging and how it may affect our style. Apparently, some bloggers do not agree with my idea. Some say that though blogging develops the habit of writing on a regular basis, the writing style is in an informal manner. I have no contentions about that. But, that's if the blogger chooses to be informal most of the time.

As for me, I write formal themes and researches and publish them too. I've encouraged my daughter to do the same. If most of us will practice this, then wouldn't it help us? Of course, the benefits I mentioned cannot apply to all and there are conditions to be met to get those results. However, those are potential and are there for the taking.

CSS and HTML - Hope for Websites

I've been wanting to change the look of all of my websites. Or at least just the this blog and the travel blog. I'm getting tired of the way they look and it's getting harder to tidy them up. Maybe I'll learn CSS. I'd like to have one of those 3 column pages so I can put all the stuff together and organize them.

Of course there are templates over at wordpress but they might not work well here. I'll soon find out. I've done some alterations on one of the unpopular blogs (I have about 5 here) but nothing really happened. I wish I had the time to do all these things. I wish...

Good News, Bad News

First, the good news: We now have 27,000 more new nurses because of those who passed the June 1 and 2 Nurse Licensure Exam in the Philippines.

Now for the bad news: We now have 27,000 more new nurses because of those who passed the June 1 and 2 Nurse Licensure Exam in the Philippines.

Sadly, the goods new IS the bad news too. It's such as treat for the young breed of nurses who passed what seems to be the hardest obstacle in their nursing career only to find out that it is even harder to get a job here as nurses. So, well, congratulations are in place but welcome to the club of the jobless!

Leading By Example

We were at the office of Congressman Roman Romulo today. He doesn't know us nor do we know anyone close to him. At least we didn't try looking for one. Our purpose was to get help for the competition which we are hosting at the ULTRA. Pleasantries were exchanged for a while and then we went right down to business.

Our visit didn't last long. 15 minutes tops. But we got what we wanted. Well, not all of it but we got his support which is more important to us.

In today's politics, men such as the good congressman, who genuinely want to help and serve, are jewels. I, being the head of the competition's solicitations committee, wrote him because he has a track record of being generous - extending aid to those whom he deems deserve it. The first time I heard about his generosity and his willingness to serve was when he personally went to my daughter's school to ask the principal how he can help there. This was just about a month or so after winning the elections.

Men who wish to help start with their own backyard. Like Congressman Romulo. There's one politician - a very popular one - who claims he can be better at doing things than the president. But, look at where he comes from. 10 years ago, the province was in almost the same state as it is now - with a small airport, a second class city, and with very little thrust in tourism. Some malls had been erected though but in a period of 10 years, was this all the city should get? Why has it not progressed so much when this politician and his family has been around for the longest time? If he can't do something about the present state of his own locality, how can he claim to be able to do a better job than the present administration? Useless talk and futile promises are what the TRAPO (traditional politicians) are made of.

That being said, who do you think deserves to be the president of the Philippines in 2010?

A Dreadful Disease

CA, Cancer, the Big C - no matter how you call it, it's the same disease that has stricken fear in us which probably for more than half a century scienc has not found a cure for.

I had been at the St. Luke's Medical Center today to visit my aunt who had a breast mass excision. About 60 years back she went to a hospital to consult about a small growth that she found on her right bossom. It was the size of a grain of rice and the male attendants dismissed her saying that it was nothing to worry about. She never bothered to have it checked again.

We were told just a few days back that she has CA cells on both breasts. The small mass is now as big as what my cousin describes as a piece of chips ahoy! I was scared that it would have metastasized already. I mean 60 years and a chips ahoy sized nodule would surely be a cause for alarm for us. We have some medical practitioners in the family and some are medically related too. We knew there was a great chance of metastasis to the nearby tissues at the minimum. But, miracle of all miracles, there wasn't any. Or at least the surgeons didn't find anything durng the surgery.

Suddenly, in just a matter of a few days, I realized how important a Breast Self Exam is. This and the Testicular Self Exam for males should never be taken for granted. Instead, it should be done religiously every month.

Sometimes, we learn the hard way.

A Difficult Decision

I've been neck deep with the things I have to do as I've been juggling between tasks - trying to start studying for my NCLEX exam, looking for volunteer work and some trainings, and preparing for the swimming competition which my daughter's team is hosting. Once I heard a wise old man say that when you want something done, you gotta give it to a busy man. Well, for one, I'm not a man. hehehe...

Like today has been tight. I had to finish doing the invitations for the coaches along with the forms that had to go with the each invite. Earlier on I had intended to visit my aunt who is in St. Luke's Hospital, go to the nearby hospital to apply for hospital training, go to the Heart Center to pick up dad's lab results, and finally go to the RMC to apply for the completion of the IV cases I need to get my IV license. I have to decide whether to do the job for the competition or to prioritize my NCLEX exam. But you see, a commitment is a commitment. That is why I am so glad that I'd have the chance to review for the NCLEX some time in September instead. That would give me time to finish the task I have to do for my bebe.

So, what am I saying? You have to forgive me for my absence here. Anyway, you'll notice that I have a new website for the competition. Thus, you'll know I have really been working.

Fighting With That Toilet Seat Again?

Ooooohhhh... that should hurt.

Take your fiber, drink lots of water and move around. Take your fiber, drink lots of water and move around. Take your fiber, drink lots of water and move around. Hah! It would sound more like a chant but that's what we normally advice our clients at the hospital to help with their uh... uhmmmm... er... constipation.

Yes, such an absurd topic but really one that is equally disturbing as having a bank collection officer go after you and deliriously painful as a woman giving birth to her first baby. The trouble with constipation is it gets you feeling so bloated the whole time that it makes you sluggish and sometimes cranky. Your guts absorb more water from your stools and along with it reabsorbs the toxins which your body has eliminated. It would be like drinking some poison only it passes a different route. When you try to let the "thing" out forcefully, it gets you into more trouble. Then comes the battle with that single witness - the toilet seat. A more painful trauma could happen - hemorrhoids. The worst part for those who have heart diseases, it could cause a heart attack!

So what should you do? come on now say it with me: Take your fiber, drink lots of water and move around.

Ok, so what's the fiber thing? Well, it's any fruit or vegetable that or any food for that matter that has ruffage. My husband used to joke about having to eat some slippers from the bicol region - they're made from the fibers of the Abaca plant. Fiber adds bulk to your stool and makes it easier to pass. But you've got to drink lot of water to not make it hard too.

As for water, remember that the gut or the large intestine actually reabsorbs water from the stools. Thus, when there's very little water present in there, there's not much liquid left in the feces making it rock hard. That's difficult to pass.

Other techniques to make your defecation easier are getting enough exercise, drinking some lactobacillus drink or yogurt (which contains bacteria that is good for the digestion), prune juice, pineapple juice and, for me at least, taking some virgin coconut oil. When all else fails, trot to your physician so he can prescribe some stool softeners for you.

Well, I hope that helps in your daily "battle".

You Gotta Swim, Child!

Shortly after the Milo Novice Competition, as I was doing some chores at home and was having some light talk with my daughter, I asked how her swim training was. Her face lit up as it always does when she talks about something that catches her fancy. "You know mom, one coach approached me today and told me that I can already transfer to another school because I can already be a scholar just from being a swimmer." "So, what did you say" I replied. "well," she said with a little smile forming at the corner of her lips, "First I told her that I probably can't because my focus is my studies. But she kept saying I can do those together - be a varsity swimmer and be a good student too. I gave a couple more reasons why I shouldn't be a varsity swimmer yet but she kept giving me rationalizations. Finally, I told her, I am already an academic scholar. To which she replied "ah ok"."

That was really funny. You should have seen how she had sort of chuckled as she was narrating her little tale.

The point is that she still kept swimming despite her hectic schedule? You know why? Because swimming helps her in oh so many ways. In terms of her health, Ikee is now no longer a sickly child as she was before. Since she started to train regularly, she has only been sick twice for the whole school year. Whereas before, she'd be sick about 5 times at the minimum. Plus it has helped her with her scoliosis. As for her studies, she's now sharper and gets even better grades. As for her social life, she is more friendly and is better able to communicate with others. She used to be so shy that you'd have to force her to talk and make friends or sometimes to even approach someone she already knows. She now has more friends of her age than ever. She has learned so many lessons in life and at the top of the list is time management. Although she still is the last one to come of the shower after swimming, but at least now it doesn't take her a minimum of 1 hour to come out. That's been cut in half. The only real reason she comes out last is because she has to wear her brace. Thus, my whole family agrees she needs to swim every weekend.

Yesterday, I was at the ULTRA and saw one of her teammates at the Pasig Flying Dolphins Swim Team who does not come to training regularly anymore. It turned out that he's so busy with school that he can't seem to find time to train. I did tell her that he needs to go because it will help him in his studies. Maybe Coach Efren strongly agreed to what I said that he blurted out "that's what I keep telling them! Your grades shouldn't be poor just because you're training."

Why should it be? Swimming makes the blood circulate better. Thus the necessary nutrients are sent to the brain and to all the other part of the body more efficiently. Not only does the blood bring nutrients, it brings oxygen to the brain. It is able to get rid of toxins and wastes from brain cells as effectively too. Therefore, when all things are in good shape, the brain is able to do its work and a lot more with less effort. The end result? The person gets more alert and consequently, gets better comprehension. Comprehension leads to retention - that is you are able to retain what you understand. In fact, when preparing for a difficult examination, it is advised to get some form of exercise to be alert. And what's the best form of exercise? That's swimming!

Swimming in a team teaches discipline, efficiency, resilience and cohesion among the members of the team. Those things are not taught in school. They are learned outside of the four corners of a classroom. I should know. I'm a teacher too.

Of course there's a little sacrifice when Ikee swims. We have to skip going to places we like more often than not because her priority is to swim on weekends. She gets tired after training so we still can't leave in the afternoons. Only at night when she has gotten enough rest. But, we can live with that. Besides, it makes us save some money in the process. I guess that's why my husband likes it so much too? Aye, darling?

Upcoming Swim Competition

There's going to be a swim competition at ULTRA again. This time hopefully it will be fair and everyone will be classified according to their level. The competition will be for the novice swimmer and the class B and C swimmers. I'll let you in on the info when it's been finalized. Anyway, for those who would be interested to join or form a team, you may get in touch with me and I can endorse you.

Training For Nurses

I've just finished my IV THERAPY Training at the Fabella Hospital. It's been a long and tiresome search for that elusive training. Now, all we have to do is to complete it. Fabella will have 2 IV trainings every month soon. I'm just not sure whether they will start doing that this July. Completion date is a different story. We had to get another schedule to do that. I'm not certain I'd want to go back there for that. It's too far from where I live. Also, a feedback I got from a friend is that when they finally had to complete their cases, on top of their schedule at Fabella they had to have another completion schedule at Amang Rodriguez Hospital in Marikina because most IV insertions were done inside the DR.

Another thing with Fabella is that it is located near the Recto station between LRT 1 and LRT 2. If you know the area, you'd know that there are shanties and squatters there not to mention the road is forever muddy. What we did was to either take a cab or a trike going to and fro.

But the training was ok. They made sure that we knew the basics before they even introduced the skill. Kinda like our NCM lab and lectures. The training room was cold and had the materials we needed. We were given an envelope each which contained the photocopies of the lectures along with a pencil, the green book which will be submitted to the ANSAP, and a notepad. Snacks were served every morning and afternoon. There were 62 of us but the area easily accomodated such a number. The audio was loud enough for you to understand what was being said even when seated at the last row.

The aseptic technique was overemphasized. At one point during the return demo I failed to mention it but had practiced it anyway. I was made to say the step just so it would sink in maybe. Of course I appreciated having been reminded of it but thought that would have been a given since all of us were registered nurses anyway. After I had observed some of my classmates I realized it was needed to be said over and over again.

Oh, we were told that we wouldn't be able to leave without getting pricked. I can still see where it left the mark. Ouch!

MIlo Novice Swim Meet 2008 Results

It's finally here. I just got the results of the competition held last May 31 at the ULTRA. Coach Mackie has the medals. Sadly, Ikee (Isabel Katrina Cajuguiran) is ranked 4th for the free style event but the good news is that she's ranked third in the overall individual scores. Thus, she still got 3 bronze medals. Woohoo!

I'm still asking why there are 2 team scores though so I can't tell you what the team's standing is. But I can assure you the team did pretty well. Pretty well, indeed. So congratulations to Coach Efren, Coach Mackie, all the other coaches and the swimmers of course.

I'm posting the results here for all to view:
